The first days of the Apple Vision Pro: The Simpsons have done it again

We already talked a few days ago about the imminent launch of Apple’s new glasses that promised (and still promise) to change the world and the way we see it, literally speaking. After their arrival in the United States on February 2nd, we have now seen the first reactions and reviews from people who have been using them.

And yes, it seems like we’ve just started a new chapter of Black Mirror.

Initial impressions of the Apple Vision Pro

Have you ever heard the phrase “Life imitates art”? It seems that it has never been so true.

Since the release of the Apple Vision Pro, we have seen thousands of users on social media drawing parallels between the use of this product and an episode of The Simpsons. Or even with the 2008 movie Wall-e, where we could see how after an end-of-the-world scenario due to pollution, people lived in space, trapped by technology with a sedentary lifestyle characterized by constantly watching floating screens in front of them.

Our director, Rubén Bastón, already told us in this video what the functionalities of the Apple glasses would be like. These glasses aim to be what other products like Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Quest 3 were not intended to be, which focused on being a leisure item. Apple promotes the use of the Apple Vision Pro as a work tool, and above all, using them without completely disconnecting from the real world. Ironically, when what you do is watch many screens while walking that you obviously wouldn’t see if you didn’t use them.

This has already sparked debate on X when a user shared a post that describes it as follows: “Not a single mobile phone in sight, just two friends, living in the moment, enjoying a meal together.”

This gives rise, or rather, establishes, a new concept: spatial computing, for which specialized agencies like Spatial Voyagers are beginning to appear, the first Spanish company focused on this new term. And even companies like Zoom and Decathlon have already launched their own applications for the Apple Vision Pro that use this concept. Spatial computing is basically about introducing technology into the space of our daily lives, as we can see in this TikTok user’s video.

Certainly, this launch is one of the most important for the bitten apple company, although it has followed the same path as when a new iPhone arrives, endless queues in front of stores, and applause for the first person to buy a pair.

However, there is a difference; when a new iPhone comes out, Apple CEO Tim Cook doesn’t always appear, unlike with the Apple Vision Pro.

Additionally, with the new Apple Vision Pro, the company has introduced a new identity verification mode, Optic ID, which is not yet available for mobile devices. This is not the first time the company has set trends, as it previously introduced fingerprint recognition and facial recognition in 2013 and 2017, respectively.

Evolution of Apple device recognition features

In addition to getting a bunch of reviews explaining what it’s like to use these glasses almost better than Apple’s own ads, there has also been room for memes and comments about those who were using the product on the street. Especially on X, which could be considered the ultimate meme social network.

A very viral video has also been shared in which a person uses Apple Vision Pro while driving, something that Apple itself warns against. It has been reported that the driver has been intervened by the authorities for the improper use of the glasses.

On the other hand, we have also seen videos of people at sports events wearing Apple glasses as if they were playing in the game.

As can be seen in the images that have been flooding the networks in recent days, we could determine the average user of the Apple Vision Pro, or if you prefer, their buyer persona. Mostly, white men aged between 25 and 40. People who, apparently, have enough money to afford glasses weighing 650 grams and the very likely appointments with their physiotherapist after using them for more than half an hour.

And some users have even used this launch to reinvent the memes we all love, like this one of Pablo Escobar waiting, but with the Apple Vision Pro.

It’s only been three days since the launch and we’ve already seen images like these… What will happen in two years? Will we have normalized it? Most likely yes, just as it happened before with other great technological advances such as artificial intelligence or the mobile phone.
