Zuckerberg believes his glasses are better than Vision Pro: here’s his comparison

With the great excitement caused by the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro and the numerous reactions it has sparked, there was one response we did not expect: that of Mark Zuckerberg. The CEO of Meta posted a video on his Instagram account in which he compares the Vision Pro with the latest version of his company’s Quest 3 and states, “I not only think that Quest has better value, but that Quest is the superior product.”

Zuckerberg’s Comparison between Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro In the video uploaded by Zuckerberg – recorded with the Meta Quest 3 by someone sitting in front of him, demonstrating the quality of the recording – the mogul does not appear wearing the Apple glasses and does not even hold them in his hands, but claims to have tried them.

While he acknowledges that Apple has made many strong points in its proposition, he also shares several reasons for preferring his own.

Price: One of the first and most obvious reasons invoked by Zuckerberg is the price difference between the two glasses, stating that Quest is “seven times cheaper”. And while the latest version of the Quest 3 costs €549.99, the Apple Vision Pro is sold in the United States for $3,500 (€3,267).

Weight and Mobility: The Quest 3 weighs 120 grams less than the Apple Vision Pro, making them more comfortable to use for longer periods. Moreover, according to the billionaire, not needing cables (the Vision Pro needs them to connect to its external battery) and having a wider field of view, the Quest allows for greater movement. “We designed it to be ideal for many other things, like moving, playing, spending time with friends and socializing, exercising, and much more. So Quest, you know, I think it’s much more comfortable.”

Graphic Quality: Another detail that stands out is the use of manual controls on the Quest and its more precise manual tracking. Although he applauded the graphic quality and eye tracking of the Vision Pro – a feature that will be deployed in future Meta models, after making their debut in the Quest Pro – he points out that they produce a greater amount of distortion and blur when the user moves in mixed reality. “Apple’s screen has a higher resolution, and that’s really good. But I was surprised by the number of compromises they had to make in terms of device quality, comfort, ergonomics, and other aspects of displaying artifacts to access it.”

Eye Tracking: “Apple’s eye tracking is really good. We actually had these sensors on the Quest Pro. We removed them for the Quest 3 and we’ll bring them back in the future. It’s a nice interface. However, it’s not perfect for everything.” For input or complex tasks, you will need elements like the much-anticipated Quest hand controllers or, eventually, a neural interface for such things.

Immersive Library: While Zuckerberg acknowledges that Apple has created a better entertainment device by partnering with many streaming platforms (such as Disney+ and Apple TV) to enable watching movies on large screens and an immersive effect, he assures that the Quest has a library of immersive content superior to its competition.

Developer Ecosystem: Although Meta has been working in virtual reality longer than anyone else, Apple has an interesting advantage, as being a device manufacturer like the iPhone and iPad, it can more easily build a software ecosystem with developers who have been working for years.

A Thank You Message At the end of the video, Zuckerberg concludes that the idea that Vision Pro is better and of higher quality, “simply because they come from Apple and are more expensive”, is not in line with reality. And while he acknowledges that in telephony, iPhones were positioned as the best mobile phones, he hopes that in this new era of computing, Meta will become the winning platform. “Every generation of computing has an open model and a closed model. In mobile, Apple’s closed model won, but if we go back to the PC era, it was Microsoft’s open model that won. In the next generation, Goal will be the open model, and I really want to make sure that the open model wins again.

For his part, he thanked his team for their efforts over many years in building their virtual reality glasses, conveying a positive and calm message in the face of the arrival of this rival that could give them a lot of headaches.
